Psychological

The psychological aspect of third-party reproduction cannot be underestimated – the testing and evaluation of the surrogate and/or donors is one of the most important aspects of your journey to creating your family.  This screening should be done by a licensed therapist or psychologist who can perform a variety of tests to determine the suitability of the surrogate and donor for the intended parents.

But where do you start?

Psychological Requirements

When considering third-party reproduction – surrogacy, egg donation, and sperm donation, most people often focus on the physical commitment – the medical testing/exams, IVF therapy, as well as the physical aspects of pregnancy and childbirth itself. But what about the psychological health of your surrogate or donor and yourself?

As most surrogates and donors can explain, a psychological commitment is just as important for everyone involved – it helps set boundaries for the parties, sets limits and restrictions, and sets each parties’ understanding. In fact, the psychological aspect of the journey is actually one of the most necessary steps in this process to ensure a favorable experience for everyone involved.

As one could expect, surrogacy and donation is a deeply personal journey, and the parties’ expectations and intentions must be taken into account every step of the way.

Surrogate Psychological Requirements

Just as a surrogate must undergo medical testing to ensure that she is physically able to undergo IVF and a healthy pregnancy, she must also complete a psychological evaluation, along with monthly therapy along the way.

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), along with most IVF Physicians, recommends that a surrogate receives both a psychological evaluation and counseling throughout her journey, led by licensed mental health professionals, for the duration of her involvement.

These evaluations help determine if she meets the requirements to carry, as well as help her and her family the ability to grasp the full scope of the commitment. Obviously, not all women are candidates for gestational surrogacy. Discussing the surrogacy journey with a professional helps give her a better understanding of what the journey entails while allowing her to explore any questions or concerns about the potential effects of surrogacy that she – or her partner – may have.

Egg Donation Psychological Requirements

Psychological screening of egg donors is an extremely important part of the screening process because you want to be certain that egg donation is both a suitable and elective process for your potential egg donor and that the donor has no psychological contraindications. Ultimately, we want to ascertain that the egg donor will fulfill her responsibilities for the cycle, along with providing the egg donor the opportunity to consider better the potential short-term and long-term impacts of egg donation.

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) guidelines state that a psychological assessment (performed by a qualified mental health professional) should include a psycho-social history focusing on the donor’s family history, educational background, assessment of stability, motivation to donate, current life stressors and coping skills, difficult or traumatic reproductive history, interpersonal relationships, sexual history, history of major psychiatric and personality disorders, substance abuse in donor or first-degree relatives, legal history, and history of abuse or neglect.

Psychological Evaluations in Third Party Reproduction

As part of the process for egg donors and their recipients, sperm donors and their recipients, and surrogates and their intended parents, a psychological assessment should be completed, along with a plan for counseling as needed along the way. This should also apply to embryo donors and their recipients.

Do I really need a psychological evaluation of my donor or surrogate?

Well, don’t you want to make certain that your donor or surrogate isn’t just “doing it for the money?”   What are her motives, and how does that affect you, if at all?  A psychological screening is important to determine the why and the reason behind their participation, which will also help the intended parents make their ultimate decision in the end.

Where do I locate resources in the area of psychology and therapy for third-party reproduction?

By looking at our data-driven resource directory at Sage, you can locate. analyze, and research those in the third-party reproduction field to ensure that your journey goes as smoothly as possible – whether you are a parent, surrogate, egg donor, sperm donor, or embryo donor.

Why do they recommend that there is a psychological evaluation of my surrogate, my donor, and myself?

Most experts recommend that the parents, as well as the surrogate and donor, seek professional counseling before proceeding with third-party reproduction because of the many psychological issues surrounding these processes. In fact, this step is always required by physicians and cannot be and should not be waived unless it has been completed previously within the last 6 to 12 months. Essentially, this step supports a positive arrangement, as does creating a thoroughly draft agreement between the parties.

How do I know if my surrogate or donor is right for me?

Well, no one can really determine with certainty how well a match between a parent and a surrogate or donor will be; however, by utilizing the most recent testing and evaluations, you can hope that all of your bases will be covered.
